Bhola Shankar is a 2023 Indian Telugu-language action film directed by Meher Ramesh. A remake of the 2015 Tamil film Vedalam, it stars Chiranjeevi as the titular character with Tamannaah Bhatia, Keerthy Suresh and Sushanth.
Bhola Shankar was released on 11 August 2023 and received negative reviews from critics. Recovering under one-fourth of its production budget, the film emerged as a box-office bomb.
Shankar , a taxi driver, embarks on a journey from Hyderabad to Kolkata with his beloved sister Mahalakshmi (Maha), determined to secure her admission to an arts college. Their arrival in Kolkata introduces them to "Kolkata" Kaali, who becomes an unlikely friend and offers assistance. With Maha settled into college, Shankar joins Vamsi's cab company, leading him to cross paths with the fierce lawyer Lasya.
Lasya cunningly involves Shankar in a charade, where he poses as a mute eyewitness in a case. However, Shankar's unforeseen words expose the ruse, resulting in an embarrassing episode. Vamsi intervenes to shield Shankar from Lasya's wrath, setting the stage for an alliance between Lasya and Vamsi, with emotions tangled in a web of vengeance.
Beneath the surface, the stage is set for a twist when it's revealed that Maha and Srikar, have secretly fallen in love, entwining their fate with unexpected consequences.
Shankar and his fellow cab drivers are enlisted by DCP Yashpal to unearth the sinister workings of a notorious crime syndicate. Shankar stumbles upon a case of arms trafficking, drawing the ire of the ruthless Bretlee and his henchmen. An encounter ensues as Shankar single-handedly takes on Bretlee. Bretlee is revealed to be Shankar's long-lost brother, separated in their childhood due to a tragic misunderstanding.

Initially, Sai Pallavi was approached for Chiranjeevi's sister role in the film but she rejected as she was not interested in remakes. Keerthy Suresh was cast in her place. Music director Mani Sharma's son Mahati Swara Sagar was signed onto this film as the composer. Tamannaah Bhatia is cast opposite Chiranjeevi in their second collaboration after Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy (2019). An official launch was held on 11 November 2021. The shoot began on 15 November 2021. In December 2021, the film completed its first schedule. In May 2023, the film completed it's final schedule.

The music is composed by Mahati Swara Sagar. Lyrics are written by Ramajogayya Sastry, Sri Mani, and Kasarala Shyam. The first single titled "Bholaa Mania" was released on 4 June 2023. The second single titled "Jam Jam Jajjanaka" was released on 11 July 2023. The third single titled "Milky Beauty" was released on 21 July 2023. The fourth single titled "Rage of Bhola" was released on 5 August 2023. The fifth single titled "Kottara Kottu Teenumaaru" was released on 7 August 2023.
Bhola Shankar received negative reviews from critics. Neesh*ta Nyayapati of The Times of India gave the film 2 out of 5 stars and wrote "Bholaa Shankar suffers because the shift between the various portions of the film is jarring, not to mention, the writing needed a deft hand. Not even Chiranjeevi and Keerthy are enough to save the day. Janani K of India Today gave the film 2 out of 5 stars and wrote "Bholaa Shankar is a remake that no one asked for or a remake that could have had a better adaptation. If only. Abhilasha Cherukuri of Cinema Express rated the film 1.5 out of 5 stars and termed the film as "hollow and distasteful homage to the mass legacy of Chiranjeevi". Raisa Nasreen of Zoom TV gave the film 1.5 out of 5 stars and wrote "A remake of the Tamil film Vedalam, and directed by Meher Ramesh, Bhola Shankar has been altered to suit the sentiments of the Telugu audience.

The new Telugu Chiranjeevi starrer Bhola Shankar is likely to be one of the Superstar's biggest flops ever. And Chiranjeevi doesn't know what has hit him.
The sources from Hyderabad reveal that the actor has decided to take time off for some serious career introspection.
"He is shell-shocked by the very poor response to Bhola Shankar. Even his diehard fans have not gone on the first day to give it a decent opening. The collections have really hurt Chiranjeevi. He will now take time off to explore the areas where he is going wrong," says a source close to the actor.
Adding insult to injury is the fact that Tamil cinema legend Rajinikanth's new release Jailer has opened better than Chiranjeevi's Bhola Shankar, even in the latter's home states, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
The wounded Superstar will use the time off for knee surgery and recovery.
"It has been on hold for some time now. Chiranjeevi's knee surgery is long due. After the tepid response to Bhola Shankar, he is taking a sabbatical during which he will have his knee attended to," an actor close to Chiranjeevi has revealed.

After tasting big success with 'Waltair Veerayya', Tollywood megastar Chiranjeevi returns with 'Bholaa Shankar,' a remake of the Tamil hit 'Vedalam', starring Ajit. However, Chiru leaves his fans and audience in despair with Bholaa Shankar. Barring a few graceful dances and action episodes, Chiranjeevi couldn't salvage an insipid plot with dreary narration loaded with senseless comedy. Vennela Kishore's bland comedy track is nothing but crap. After playing a Good Samaritan in many movies, Chiru has showcased 'grey' shades in this film, but it doesn't offer any excitement since the role of a hooligan is predictable and outdated.

Less said the better about Tamannaah's ill-defined role which is half-baked. Director Meher Ramesh who delivered flops like 'Shakti' and 'Shadow' is making a comeback with this much-hyped movie. He hasn't learnt the art of filmmaking yet and still believes that he can pull off a winner with a wafer-thin plot loaded with songs, fights and comedy. He is bound to be disappointed in the days to come.
Chiranjeevi's character in the backdrop of Kolkata, reminds us of his blockbuster 'Chudalani Undi'. But this outlandish film is no match to it since the former had a strong emotional connection between father and son. If Meher thought, the brother-sister in this film, could help him out, he got it all wrong since this bonding lacks depth or emotional connect.
The film is about the story of Bholaa, who arrives in Kolkata, to get his sister (Keerthy Suresh), enrolled in a college and settles down in a small house. He takes up a job as a taxi driver and finds Susanth following his sister. He gets to know that the boy is in love with her and fixes their engagement. Meanwhile, he stumbles upon gang members involved in kidnapping young girls and sets out to track them down. Will he be able to bust the gang and save girls? Watch the movie in theatres to find out.
Chiranjeevi's signature dance moves and swag in action episodes deserves some appreciation, but his role of hooligan-turned-doting brother isn't impressive enough to keep the audience hooked. Tamannaah plays a failed lawyer and she is just there to entertain Chiranjeevi whenever possible because their earlier tiffs look forced than realistic. Keerthy Suresh's role provides ample scope for performance and she delivers effortlessly. Vennela Kishore disappoints with his life-less comedy, while Murali Sharma and Tulasi are just ok as parents of Keerthy Suresh.
Music composer Mahati Swara Sagar fails to render any exciting chartbusters, while dialogues of Mamidala Tirupathi are also not up to the mark.

Chiranjeevi should avoid doing remakes and simply choose to do straight Telugu stories like 'Waltair Veerayya'. With young heroes ruling the roost in TFI, Chiru has to be doubly careful and should focus on quality over quantity, if he has to sustain his image earned with his efforts over the four decades. Unfortunately, his scathing comments against YCP leaders in real-life could enthuse his fans over his dialogues in this movie.
